How do you get spider veins?
Hormones and heredity are usually to blame for spider veins, which are most common in women between the ages of 30 and 50. They are more of a cosmetic annoyance and not painful like varicose veins. But that doesn’t mean that patients want to live with them.
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is the most effective way to remove spider veins. Developed in the 1930s, this treatment consists of a highly concentrated saline or sodium tetradecyl sulfate solution that is injected directly into the vein using a very fine needle.
How long does it take to see results?
When the solution is injected into the vein, it irritates the vein wall, causing it to collapse and close off the vein. This instantly diminishes the appearance of the vein, and over the next few weeks, any remaining visible vein vanishes.
Is it painful?
Before treatment, Dr. Zakhary applies local anesthesia. Many patients say it feels like a little sting, but the burning sensation only lasts for a few seconds. The treatment session only takes 30 minutes or less, and your doctor will help you determine how many treatment sessions you need to remove spider veins.
Do I have to limit my activity after treatment?
You will be asked to wear compression hose during waking hours for 1-2 weeks. This helps your body absorb the closed-off veins that much faster. Walking and moderate exercise is fine after the procedure. Avoid strenuous exercise for about one week after treatment.
